The cloaked fusion gambit
Skip investing in fighters early and build cloaked fusion instead. When enemy bombers arrive expecting to shred undefended factories, they run into invisible anti-air and take heavy attrition. The opponent never figures out where the damage is coming from until flak is already dropping their bombers.
This strategy works best when playing greedier on economy and letting the fusion do its job. You are trading fighter air control for a hidden defensive wall that punishes aggression.
When this strategy works and when it does not
Cloaked fusion catches aggressive bomber rushes flat-footed. It works especially well on maps where the defender has time to set up before the first wave arrives. On maps with very short rush distances, fighters still provide more reliable early coverage because they patrol rather than sitting static.
Air fighters still have their place. They contest enemy air, scout, and control the map. Cloaked fusion is a defensive anchor, not air superiority. Think of it as a trap rather than an air force.
Economy-first gameplay
Skipping fighter investment frees up metal and energy for faster economy expansion. You come out ahead on resources by the time the dogfight phase arrives. The opponent invests in a bomber wing that meets invisible guns, while you sit on a stronger economy. By that point the game is already sliding your direction.
