Getting Started in BAR: Map Control and Metal Spots

Beyond All Reason looks intimidating at first glance. The key to your first wins comes down to two priorities: map control and metal spots.

The core loop

Every BAR match follows the same economic rhythm. You claim metal spots, build extractors on them, construct enough energy generation to keep your factories fed, then spend the surplus on armies. The player who controls more metal spots builds faster, fields larger armies, and eventually overwhelms opponents through superior resources.

Priority one: metal spots

At the start of every match, send your builder to the nearest high-value metal spot and start building an extractor. High metal spots produce significantly more income than low-value ones. The map layout shows metal density, so scan for the brightest clusters and push your expansion toward them.

Priority two: energy balance

Your metal production means nothing without enough energy to run it. Wind generators and solar panels are cheap early-game energy. As you expand, add more. A common mistake newer players make is queuing up endless energy buildings even after their metal income runs dry. When your metal bar sits empty and you are wasting energy, stop building energy plants and shift your economy toward military units instead.

Map control drives everything

Expand outward from your starting position. Each expansion needs a builder, an energy source, and metal extractors. Pushing your forward edge toward the center of the map denies your opponent the best resources. Players who turtle in their starting base eventually lose simply because they run out of metal spots to expand into.
