Understanding why Beyond All Reason displays a minimum rating of zero, what is actually happening beneath the surface, and how constructor choices change by game phase.
Beyond All Reason uses the OpenSkill algorithm for matchmaking. The system displays your match rating with a hard floor at zero. Players who are still learning may see zero on screen while their actual underlying rating sits well into negative territory.
This display convention exists to avoid discouraging new players with intimidating negative numbers. The rating algorithm does not stop at zero though. It continues tracking progress accurately behind the scenes, and the true number affects future match pairings.
Players who want to see their actual OpenSkill numbers can visit the BAR ratings server directly. The server provides raw mu and sigma values that the in-game display rounds or floors for presentation.
BAR offers three constructor categories: bot builders, vehicle builders, and air constructors. The right choice depends on context.
Early game: Ground constructors are the sensible default. They are cheap and provide adequate build power for opening mex placement and basic defense. The choice between bot and vehicle constructor rarely matters at this stage.
Air constructors: These feel expensive early game because the build power per metal ratio is poor in team games. However, air constructors become valuable later for rapid expansion, reclaim collection, and reaching otherwise inaccessible build sites.
New players should start each team game with their faction ground constructor and consider transitioning to air support once the core economy stabilizes.
