Why your OS rating barely moves after a dominant BAR win

Eliminating four enemy players and winning the game but only gaining 0.18 OS rating feels unfair. Here is why BAR's rating system calculates gains that way.

Only wins and losses matter

Open Skill calculates rating changes based on win or loss and the relative skill of teams. Personal performance does not factor in. Whether you eliminated four players or just held the backline, a win is a win and the rating system treats it the same way.

Why some wins earn less

When a match has uneven team composition, the system adjusts. Higher OS teammates on your side reduce your individual gain because the outcome was expected. The system essentially says the stronger side was supposed to win. A dominant personal performance does not overcome mismatched teams in the rating calculation.

What this means for improvement tracking

OS rating measures whether you beat opponents of similar combined strength, not how impressive your individual play was. Players looking for personal feedback should look at replay analysis and strategic decisions rather than rating point totals. The rating tells you about match balance, not personal ceiling.
