Why run your own server

Official BAR matchmaking handles ranked games well. A private server gives you full control over the rules, unit tweaks, and who joins. This matters for mod testing, custom balance experiments, and organized team events.

What you need

A BAR server setup typically runs two components: teiserver handles the matchmaking and lobby coordination, while SPADS provides the autohost. The SPADS wiki on GitHub has a Windows LAN server quick install guide and a separate client configuration page for connecting players.

Getting it running

The fastest route uses Ansible playbooks that provision both teiserver and autohost in under thirty minutes. Even without Ansible, following the SPADS installation guides step by step produces a working server in roughly an hour. You control the autohost settings directly through lobby commands once it is online. This includes selecting custom mod options, setting team restrictions, and enabling specific unit tweaks.

Who gets to host

Server access management is critical. Some operators keep their AI difficulty gates restricted so that only the designated host can change AI settings until a specific balance branch is published. This prevents accidental or experimental configurations from affecting active matches.

Custom AI compatibility

A common question for modders running their own servers is whether custom AI modules work with specific game modes, such as space-based maps. BAR AIs can be built using Lua or the C ABI. Compatibility depends on whether the AI module supports the specific game mode and map conditions. Test on a private server first before deploying to any public environment.

Creed of Champions and organized play

Serious team environments benefit from having access to custom servers where rules match the skill level and goals of the group. Creed of Champions values that kind of structured, disciplined approach to team play. Members get access to organized events where rules are clear and communication is always respectful.
