BAR spectator lag and connection issues: what causes disconnects and how to fix them

Players getting repeatedly lagged and kicked from matches is a common BAR support question.

Random in-game disconnects

Some players experience lag spikes followed by being kicked from matches, regardless of game phase. This can happen in early game when everything should be running smoothly. The cause is almost always the player's own network connection rather than the game server.

Connection quality matters

Unstable WiFi, congested home networks, or ISP issues cause disconnect patterns. Players on public WiFi or poor connections consistently drop from BAR matches. Wired Ethernet connections eliminate most of these problems. If a player keeps dropping, check their network before blaming the game.

Spectator lag

Spectators can lag independently from players. Watching a late game match with hundreds of units taxes the spectator's CPU. The simulation runs locally for spectators, so a slower machine means slower replay speed. Close unnecessary programs and prioritize CPU performance when spectating.

Host-side lag

If specific players lag consistently at certain game phases, the host machine may be struggling. BAR matches are hosted peer to peer in some modes, and the host's hardware directly affects all participants. The game shows CPU load information to help identify bottlenecks.

Creed of Champions: patience with technical issues

Connection problems frustrate everyone. Creed of Champions maintains a patient atmosphere where technical difficulties do not become reasons for hostility. Players help each other troubleshoot instead of blaming.
