Switching teams mid-lobby sounds simple until you learn BAR does not let you rejoin a match once you have entered spectator mode. Here is how to avoid getting locked out.

BAR allows players to move to spectator during the lobby phase. The catch is that the game treats spectator as a committed state change. Once you are in spec, the lobby system does not let you swap back into an active team slot in that same match. This catches newer players regularly, especially when they step aside so a friend can play.
If teammates need to rearrange, all swaps should happen simultaneously before any single player hits the spectator button. The player moving to spectator should be the very last person to change slots, only after confirming the other players have their new teams locked.
Think of it like standing in a checkout line. If you step out to grab something you forgot, the line does not hold your spot. BAR lobbies work the same way.
BAR enforces balanced team sizes. You cannot vacate a slot on one team and drop onto the other if that would create an uneven split. Check the lobby team count before any player agrees to move. The lobby host usually displays these limits clearly.
If you are experiencing broader lobby problems like failed joins or frozen states, a full game restart usually clears things. The BAR client occasionally hits a bad handshake state with the matchmaking server, and cycling the application resets the connection.
Lobby coordination mistakes happen far less often in organized communities where team composition gets discussed before anyone touches the join button.

Creed of Champions sets up team matches with clear roles and communication channels before the game even starts, so nobody gets caught in spectator by accident.
