Understanding visibility settings, the difference between player view and spectator mode, and how to get your expected map view back.

A common question from newer BAR players is why spectator mode shows the entire map while their own game is full of dark patches. That is fog of war working as intended. As a player, you only see units in range of your own scouts and structures. Spectators see everything because the game lifts all visibility restrictions for observers.
Some players accidentally toggle settings that remove fog of war visually without actually changing the game mechanic. The map looks lit up but their units still cannot detect enemies outside normal sight range. This creates confusion when players think they should be seeing enemy movements but are not.
Night mode adds a visual darkness layer on top of fog of war. Turning off night mode brightens the map but does not reveal hidden enemy units. If you disabled night mode and expected to see the full map like a spectator does, the setting you are looking for is actually fog of war toggle, not the brightness or night setting.
BAR's settings menu separates visual options from gameplay options. Night mode and ambient brightness live under graphics. Fog of war behavior is a gameplay setting. If you want to restore darkness to the map after accidentally changing something, check both sections. Most accidental changes are just a single toggle in the graphics panel.
Fog of war is not a nuisance. It is the entire reason scouting exists in BAR. Without it, the game becomes a chess match where both players see the full board. With fog of war, you need scouts, radar installations, and scout aircraft to gather information about enemy composition and movement. Players who ignore scouting lose games to strategies they never saw coming.
Your first scout should go out the moment you have a unit that can move off base. The information it brings back about enemy base layout and early factory choices shapes your entire build order.
Understanding fog of war and map awareness improves quickly when you play with teammates who communicate enemy sightings. Creed of Champions emphasizes this kind of cooperative play where information sharing is expected and encouraged.
